Hi. I’m Kristen Althoff, an artist from Chicago with a focus on design, knitting, installation, photography, and community arts. I previously co-owned the now defunct {fill in the blank} Gallery in Chicago. This is a blog of projects and inspirations that make up my crazy life.

Everything that you see on this blog is original content unless otherwise noted. Please share, but link back to me. Thanks!

Busy spring already! I keep promising myself that I’m going to sit down and start doing my blog again but I just haven’t had the time. Also, my camera is having some memory card issues that I need to figure out, so lately I’ve had to take all my pictures with my cell phone. Anyway, here’s a list of some of the things I’ve been up to. I plan to post more regularly again soon.

  • Been knitting lots of socks out of this book on my commute to work.
  • Kombucha making. I’m on my second batch already, the first turned out a little too sweet for my taste so this time less sugar and more fermentation.
  • I got a new bike!
  • Participated in Zine Fest a couple weekends ago and had a blast.
  • Starting to work in a nearby community garden once a week in exchange for some of the common produce and a possible future plot. Super excited to get my hands dirty but also have some time for reflection and contemplation in nature.
  • Still working through lots of health issues but staying positive, changing perspectives, finding peace, and pushing through the things that are hard.

What have you been up to so far this spring?

I‘ve been busy, but here’s a photo of Bill holding a balloon at the Chicago Cultural Center earlier this month (his birthday weekend in fact!). Lots of things going on, just not enough time to post. Hope to catch up soon!

This is my first order of direct trade, bike delivered coffee from Grinderman Coffee in Chicago. I brewed my first cup yesterday morning and it is really good! Not to mention this whole operation is done from start to finish by one person. He sources the coffee and visits the growers, roasts, and delivers to a huge delivery zone all by himself. I highly recommend checking out the information about his process and direct trade on his website.

Money Bags is a project I found out about at FluxFest this last weekend. The purpose of the project, from their website:

“MoneyBags re-evauates wealth, worth and currency. It creates reencounters with a familiar image that has been popular in cartoons, illustrations, and the surreal. Ideas of ownership, abandonment, economy, luxury, generosity, legality, and the ridiculous are also apart of the project.—-Left in the public, for the public, MoneyBags is a project for you to participate in. Construct your own MoneyBags and add them to the public. Donations to our collection is also encouraged.”

This is the bag that I grabbed, which had actual money in it (most contain small pieces of art). There were a bunch of quarters, and a few nickles, dimes, and pennies. When I got home I counted exactly $9.11, a number which I’m sure was not a coincidence. I don’t plan on spending the money myself. Instead I plan on taking it somewhere and either handing it to someone  in need or placing it on the street/bus stop somewhere. As long as someone doesn’t think it’s a suspicious package :)

Ghosts I Have Been performing at Chicago Cultural Center this last weekend during FluxFest 2012. She did a 45 minute set that included audience participation with bells, tambourines, and other small musical instruments.
